Finding Inspiration- Tom Hunter

The reason why I am interested in the works of Tom Hunter is, similarly to our own brief, he found himself in a location of inspiration and integrated the surroundings and people who lived there into a work that reflected his impression of the area.

The Ghetto, 1990

After taking the initial photographs, he then took this work further by recreating the streets and the moments of life he had photographically captured by making a model, which replicated the houses exactly and when a viewer looked through the miniature windows, they would find themselves looking in on photographs of the people who actually lived there.

“This art work reveals the harsh realities of London life as it uncovers a Hackney street of the 1990s populated with squatters.

Tom Hunter produced this cardboard sculpture for his degree show at London College of Printing. It is an extraordinary recreation of two streets in Hackney that were lived in long-term by squatters who suddenly faced eviction. Hunter photographed the buildings and when you look through the windows of the cardboard houses, his photography illustrates the interior.”
